UK Missing Targets for Heat Pump Installations

The government has said its goal is to install 600,000 heat pumps each year in British homes by 2028, but recent figures have revealed that it is nowhere near hitting its target.

The National Audit Office (NAO) warned the government that there is lack of public awareness of heat pumps and they are too expensive. This is after finding that only 55,000 heat pumps were sold in the UK in 2022.

The main reasons that heat pumps have had a low uptake are due to:

  • The higher cost compared to boilers
  • Lack of awareness about the technology and its benefits
  • Lack of long-term financial support for households

It’s also important to note that government funding is available to cover the cost and installation of an air source heat pump, so Arktek engineers are working to build awareness of air source heat pumps and the funding eligibility.

What are heat pumps?

Heat pumps use electricity rather than gas, a form of energy that is much more climate-friendly than gas, which is what powers boilers. They work by converting outside air into heating and hot water in your home by converting a refrigerant from a liquid into a gas, compressing it to create heat.

Air source heat pumps offer incredible long-term savings on energy bills, and they are also available for free for certain people in receipt of benefits under the government’s ECO4 scheme.

If you have a home which has enough space outside to accommodate an air source heat pump, adequate installation in place, and are in receipt of government benefits, you could qualify for a free or discounted air source heat pump alongside solar panels.
