What is cavity wall insulation?

Homeowners could benefit from having a warmer home, reducing their carbon footprint, and lowering their energy bills by having cavity wall insulation installed.

A study has found that cavity wall insulation is the most effective type of insulation, and certain types of cavity wall insulation could reduce the heat loss in your property by up to 70%!

So, what is cavity wall insulation and could you benefit from having it installed in your home?

Cavity wall insulation is an effective method of retaining heat in homes that have cavity walls, which consist of two brick walls that have a gap (AKA ‘cavity’) between them that may be letting heat escape from the building.

Cavity wall insulation keeps your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer by regulating the temperature within the property.

How do I know if I have cavity walls?

You can determine if your home has cavity walls if the property was built after the 1930s and if the exterior bricks are laid lengthways with an even pattern.

What is the process of having cavity wall insulation installed?

The installation of cavity wall insulation takes just a couple of hours and is less disruptive than the installation of other types of wall insulation. This is because the process simply involves injecting ‘beads’ into the cavity to fill the space between the interior and exterior wall using a specially designed injection gun.

Arktek partners with supplier, Thermabead, a premium choice for high-performance blown bead insulation technologies.

What is Thermabead and what are the benefits of Thermabead insulation?

Traditionally, cavity walls have been insulated with glass wool or rock, which cannot quite fill the cavity as well as the Thermabead system, which uses 2mm-9mm closed cell polystyrene beads which settle in densely, leaving almost no space between the beads within the gap. The small size of the beads and efficient injection process also means that 30% fewer drill holes are required for the process, compared to other types of insulation.

Thermabead also features moisture distribution technology that helps to prevent dampness issues, is fire resistant, and will is long lasting.

Arktek Engineers are a team of North East based Gas Safe engineers who specialise in the installation of cavity wall insulation throughout Newcastle, the North East and Yorkshire. We offer a range of services and can also advise on your eligibility for funding for home energy improvements.
